Careers Program

At Gilmore College staff and students work closely together through a planned program of learning experiences to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes which will assist students to make informed decisions about study and /or work options to enable effective participation in working life.

This is achieved through students at Yr 10 level participating in a Work – Experience Program over a 2 week period that involves students working under supervision in various roles and environments. This opportunity gives students an appreciation of the skills required not only to gain employment, but also to progress within an enterprise so as to achieve one’s potential.

Students are also involved in Career Counselling with the Career Fast Track program. Students are involved in group discussions with representatives from Careers Fast Track which are then followed up with individual student’s interviews. These interviews help individuals to explore personal issues related to life and work decisions; it facilitates application of information and skills in developing individual life, learning and work plans.

Students also participate in a Careers Day which involves guest speakers from a variety of Universities, Colleges, and Vocational Employment Services etc. Students have an opportunity to discuss with the guest speakers the various prerequisites, tertiary requirements on the job training and personal requirements of their areas of interest. The Careers Day aims to introduce Yr 10 students to the various roles people adopt within the workplace.

By offering students at Gilmore the opportunity to be involved in these activities that involve career education and counselling, students are helped to move from a general understanding of life and work to a specific understanding of the realistic life, learning and work options open to them.
