Gilmore Girls College – A Leading School
|
In January 2008, Gilmore College opened its new, architect designed Learning Communities Centre which was funded by the Department of Education's 'Leading School' Fund. This followed a successful submission for acceptance into the Leading Schools' Fund in 2005.
The new Learning Communities Centre provides an excellent facility for the Gilmore Years 7 and 8 program which features an ICT rich, integrated and authentic curriculum supported by the latest in information and communication technology equipment. The Learning Communities program employs a broad repertoire of teaching strategies and resources for successful learning. The aim of the program is to produce active, independent and engaged learners.
|
The Leading School award also meant that the College could employ additional teachers to replace staff members appointed to our Leading School's Team for some of the subjects they would usually teach. This enabled the Leading School's Team to further develop and publish our junior integrated curriculum and ICT program. The Leading School's Team also organizes ongoing professional development for teachers.

The Learning Communities building is an open plan building equivalent to the size of three large classrooms plus a foyer, a wet area, staff conference room and multi media studio. It is connected to a Year 7 and 8 dedicated Science room. The Learning Communities Centre is multifunctional to allow for innovative teaching practices that encourage active, independent student learning. The flexible design of the learning area allows a range of student groupings that can be adapted as need be, such as all year 7 students seated to watch a media presentation or mixed groups across all Year 8 completing a project. It is an ICT rich environment with an extensive range of the latest computer facilities that provide immediate access and “anywhere, anytime” use of Information and Communications technology.
