Year 7 SOSE Environmental Excursion
On Wednesday 21st May 80 year 7 students and their teachers walked to Newell’s Paddock to look at the wetlands, learn about the flora and fauna and complete their mapping exercise. Steve and Sue, the Maribyrnong Council Parks and Garden’s rangers, informed the students of the history and ecology of the area. Students learnt how they could learn to protect the wetlands.

Westside Arts
Two students from Gilmore performed in the Westside Arts Concert at Hamer Hall last Monday evening. This is a huge celebration of the talent of the young people in the West and it is always a terrific night with items of a very high standard. Geraldine Gray and Elsie Daddow were members of the flute ensemble. Thank you to Lynette Newman for supporting the girls’ involvement in this great opportunity.

Leading Schools Fund - 2008
New Gilmore parents may not be aware that, towards the end of 2005, we were selected for inclusion in The Leading School Fund which is a staff development and facilities improvement program. Our participation in this program allowed us to build a new open learning space which complements the learning program at Years 7 and 8. At the start of the 2008 school year, it is very exciting to know that our new Year 7s have commenced the year in the new building which was signed off in late January. The new building and the associated resources will allow our teachers to improve your daughter’s chances for success by engaging and extending them and improving their ICT skills.

From the Principal January 31st 2008
I am very pleased to take up the position as Principal of Gilmore Girls College and look forward to meeting you at various events throughout the year. I’II take this opportunity to provide you with a little background information about myself.
This is the eighth school I have worked in. Upon graduating I spent 12 months teaching in country Victoria before returning to Melbourne. I taught at 3 western region schools: Sunshine West HS, Footscray Yarraville SC and Taylors Lakes SC; before moving over to the northern region where I taught at Fawkner SC before taking up the position of Assistant Principal at La Trobe SC. I am committed to the education of young people and to ensuring that, as a college, we address the educational and emotional needs of the students here at Gilmore.

2008 VCE Students - Best Wishes for the Future
Congratulations to our 2008 VCE girls for a very successful year. Although most of them will be preparing for interesting and attractive tertiary courses, we hope that they return to Gilmore to share an afternoon tea we host to check their post Gilmore progress or to just visit us when passing. They are part of the tradition of Gilmore College.
Good luck class 2008 and best wishes from all the staff and students at Gilmore College.

Advance/Duke of Edinburgh – Bronze award 2008
Year 10 Advance students at Gilmore can participate in the Duke of Edinburgh awards, which is a scheme whereby students develop confidence in themselves and learn the benefits of persistence and endurance. As preparation for their Adventurous Journey or Expedition, students learn how to put up tents and how to prepare food and shelter in the bush. We begin by seeing if they can manage on the school’s oval! Students also participate in planting trees for Parks Victoria, as well as learning self-defence and survival skills. Our girls learn that joining in and working together equals having fun.
