Supporting the Needs of Individuals
|
Gilmore’s innovative Middle Years Program at Years 7 to 9, where two key teachers teach a home group for at least two subjects each, one for Maths/Science and the other for English/SOSE, means that each home group has two key teachers for at least 60% of their week. These two teachers work closely as a team, know their students well and build positive relationships. Team teachers have control over discipline and welfare issues for their home group - the monitoring of attendance, lateness, classroom management, academic achievement and parent contact. Students have a greater sense of belonging in a more caring environment where the needs of the individual are met. This also provides a more comfortable transition from primary school into a similar structure.
Each junior school class has their own home room in which they undertake the majority of their classes. Home rooms feature displays of their work and store materials for their studies. The timetable of 4 periods of 72 minutes ensures that students have fewer room changes and longer periods in which to learn.

Safe Schools are Effective Schools
|
Excellent survey feedback from students and parents indicate that Gilmore is considered a very safe school. It is very pleasing that Gilmore was consequently chosen to be a case study school for an Education Department study into Bullying. Not only were we a case study school with members of the research group interviewing staff, students and parents over a few days, to collect further data on why we had a such a low incidence of bullying and an excellent safe school record, we were also chosen to launch the Department of Education's project “Safe schools are effective schools.”
